Responding to the UN-backed IPC’s latest report* on hunger in Sudan, Mohammed Qazilbash, Country Director for Plan International Sudan said:
“Today’s IPC report has confirmed what we have feared for months now – that famine is imminent in multiple areas of Sudan. Children are already dying of starvation, and we are now in a race against time to avert a full-blown famine.
A military invasion of Rafah, as announced by Israel this week, can only be a humanitarian catastrophe, leading to horrific loss of life. Humanitarian aid and fuel have now been completely blocked from entering through the Rafah crossing, a crucuial aid corridor, since Sunday May 5. This is unacceptable and will lead to even more suffering.
The situation in Gaza is catastrophic, with famine now imminent, according to the IPC partnership’s latest report. This human-made situation will worsen rapidly unless significant, immediate measures are taken.
Plan International is deeply concerned by the significant increase in violence in Haiti. Gang violence has now displaced more than 362,000 people from their homes, a figure that has increased by 15,000 in just 10 days. Of those displaced from their homes, one in three (32%) are children and adolescents.
Children are dying from starvation in Gaza. We’re calling for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire and a massive increase in humanitarian assistance. The Australian Government must reinstate funding immediately to UNRWA – the main aid provider for the 1.1 million children facing starvation in Gaza – and must prioritise delivering lifesaving aid to people in Gaza.
As the number of children killed in Gaza tragically reaches 10,000, Plan International calls on governments worldwide to stand in solidarity with Palestinian children.
