We see it happen, but uncomfortably look away. We feel the urge to speak up but stay cautiously silent. We all want to do something about it, but don’t know what. Or worse, we end up thinking it’s “not a big deal”.

Street harassment is always a big deal. And now, we have what it takes to stand up to it.

Originally developed by the world’s leading beauty brand L’Oréal Paris and the US-based NGO Right to Be, Stand Up Against Street Harassment offers a proven methodology – the 5D’s – to help people to safely intervene if they witness or experience street harassment.

This one-hour, virtual interactive training is being offered completely free, and will be delivered by Plan International Australia’s Youth Activists to the public and organisations across Australia.

READY TO TAKE THE TRAINING?

For businesses and organisations

The Stand Up Against Street Harassment training is currently available to any business or organisation in Australia that would like to give their staff the opportunity to be a part of the change, and build safe spaces for all. The training is online, interactive and completely free.

Facilitated by the incredible youth activists of Plan International Australia, this training covers what public sexual harassment looks like, and introduces how the 5D’s of bystander intervention can help: distract, delegate, document, delay and direct. Training participants will learn how they can prioritise their own safety while intervening and how to respond if they get harassed in a public place.

Your staff will leave feeling more confident to recognise and safely intervene the next time they see harassment, helping to create an empowering space where all can thrive.

OUR WORK TO END STREET HARASSMENT

In recent years Plan International Australia has actively campaigned to end street harassment, and our youth activists have been at the centre of this work. From co-designing our Free to Be crowd-mapping tool, rallying participation in the research and adding girls’ voices to the national conversation about their right to live safely in their cities, they have been steadfast in their commitment to this important issue.

Advocating for girls and young women’s safety, Plan International and our youth activists have engaged with numerous power holders and stakeholders to push for change and implement the recommendations they wanted to see from our Unsafe in the City report research. Among other transformational outcomes, this campaign led to a new Women’s Safety Charter being adopted by the Greater Sydney Commission, Transport for NSW and the Committee for Sydney in 2020.
