Child rights organisation Plan International Australia has launched a public appeal for donations to help get life-saving aid and support to people fleeing Syria's brutal civil conflict.
The Syrian civil war has triggered one of the greatest humanitarian crises since the Second World War, with millions fleeing the country. About a quarter of these refugees are children.
Plan International is working through its partners to provide life-saving aid to refugees in the region, providing healthcare to hundreds of people a day in refugee camps.
Plan International also helps provide emotional support to children who have witnessed war, supporting them to continue their education, a crucial step to gaining normality in their life. Since 2013, we have helped more than 10,000 people through healthcare and education programs and offered critical emotional support to children and families.
“As always, we at Plan International – like all Australians – are deeply concerned for the children caught up in this almost unimaginable crisis. It is hugely important that we provide all the support we can to them and their families at this critical time,” says Plan International Australia CEO Ian Wishart.
“We have been working, along with our partners in the region, to support thousands of children, who so often end up paying the highest price in crises like this. We must ensure that they and their families are cared for,” Wishart says.
“Supporting children who are fleeing a violent civil conflict is particularly close to our hearts at Plan International: our organisation began 77 years ago when our founder chose to help one displaced child caught up in the Spanish Civil War,” he adds.
“As we have grown over the decades, we have never lost sight of our mission to support children in their times of need, and this is a most desperate hour for many thousands of children in Syria. But we cannot do this alone. We need the help of all Australians as we work for the children of Syria.”
Australians can donate to Plan International’s appeal for Syrian refugees by visiting plan.org.au/Syria or calling 13 75 26.
Plan is one of the oldest and largest children's development organisations in the world, founded 77 years ago, working in 51 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas and supported by 21 donor countries. Plan is independent, with no religious, political or governmental affiliations.
