East Africa Drought Appeal - Children in Crisis

Plan is responding to the food crisis in East Africa where severe drought has gripped the region, leaving millions of people without food and water. Your donation can help provide emergency food relief and other essential items to those affected.

Failed rains since last year led to poor crops and endangered livestock across Djibouti, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda, and famine has been declared in Somalia. The United Nations' humanitarian agency (OCHA) estimates that 500,000 children are seriously malnourished.

How you can help

$20

will provide a clean water kit - soap, bucket, and water purification tablets for a family of five for one month

$40

$75

will feed a family of six for two weeks

$150

Children are facing severe malnutrition

After meeting Yoseph at Plan's food distribution centre in southern Ethiopia, staff identified that he is seriously malnourished. They believe that his body is so low in protein that his leg has started to swell, making it difficult for him to walk.

"My leg is very painful," says Yoseph. "It's really swollen and walking is very hard. I try to move on just one leg.

Centre: Yoseph, 8, has arrived at Plan’s food distribution point in the Wondogenet area in Southern Ethiopia.

"I came here with my mother. I have no father. I need help with food. I don't have anything, nothing to eat.

"Life is very difficult. At home we don’t have a field to grow food. We don’t have anything. I don't feel well and I am scared.

"I hope food supplies will help me get better. I think my leg needs some treatment. My mother has no money to pay for more medicine."

Yoseph is receiving food and support from Plan staff at the distribution centre. You can help us support more children such as Yoseph with a donation to our East Africa Drought Appeal.

* In the event that the appeal is oversubscribed or circumstances in the field prevent completion of our operations funds will be retained in our Children in Crisis fund and used for later emergencies.

Sponsored Children Update

Plan Child Sponsorship programs are operational in four of the countries affected by the East Africa drought; Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda.

In Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan there are sponsored children and their families living in the drought -affected areas.  We will continue to provide updates here, however should the situation change, information relating to individual sponsored children will be shared with their respective sponsors.  Day to day sponsorship related activities will continue, therefore sponsors can still write to their sponsored children.
