Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela late evening on June 24, just 39 seconds apart. Details are still unfolding but it’s clear the death toll is rising. As of Wednesday 25 June, 164 people have died, hundreds are missing, and interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, has declared a national state of emergency. This crisis will turn young lives upside down.
The first quake hit at what would normally be rush hour. But because it was a national holiday, many families were at home – meaning entire households were caught in the devastation.
Earthquakes tear children away from their families. They disrupt the safety of home and the stability of school, and leave people with nothing but the clothes they are wearing.
Disasters like this turn children’s lives upside down in seconds, and in times of crisis girls are even more vulnerable. While the scale of the humanitarian impact is still emerging, girls and communities will need support.
In emergencies like this, time is critical and we need your help to reach people fast. Homes, schools, hospitals, roads, water sources, and communications have been badly damaged. Rescue workers are searching for survivors under the rubble.
As in all crises, girls are likely to be disproportionately affected, help us ensure the unique needs of girls are not forgotten.
