Running on empty: The devastating impact of the global hunger crisis on children, girls and vulnerable groups

The COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis and now the war in Ukraine have created the perfect storm for global hunger. As a result more than 10,000 children are dying each day. That’s the equivalent of an Australian classroom dying every 3.5 minutes.

Girls in particular are at extreme risk. When food is scarce, girls are the first to be pulled out of school and the last to be fed. Entrenched gender inequalities mean that they are given less food to eat and are the first in the family to skip meals.

There is an urgent need for humanitarian assistance and funding to overcome this unprecedented combination of challenges and save lives.

Plan International Australia’s research report shines a light on the escalating global hunger crisis – it’s causes, it’s impacts and most importantly, what we can do to stop it.
