Help stop child marriage

CONTENT WARNING: Mention of child marriage and suicide.

Amara* was devastated when she learned she was to be married to a man more than twice her age.

She told her parents she didn’t want a husband. She cried and begged them to change their mind. In one desperate moment, she even tried to take her own life.

Every year, millions of girls are married before they turn 18. Child marriage strips them of their rights, their education, their safety, and their chance to create the future they want for themselves.

Without urgent action, more than 150 million girls will become child brides by 2030.

Will you please donate to help stop child marriage?

Your generous gift could help:

  • Raise awareness of the dangers of child marriage.
  • Fund medical care and counselling to help girls recover from abuse and trauma.
  • Help girls create a business with training and cash assistance, empowering them to start the future they want, and lift their family out of poverty.

Change is possible.

In recent years, Plan International supporters have helped outlaw child marriage in the Republic of Mozambique, the Dominican Republic, Sierra Leone, and Colombia.

We need your help to build on this momentum.

Help end child marriage

Every child marriage you stop creates a more equal world.

Child marriage can have a devastating impact on a girls’ health, freedom, and education.

A girl who marries young is more likely to experience domestic abuse and marital rape.

If she falls pregnant in adolescence she risks long-term health complications or even death during childbirth.

Once she marries, a girl is far less likely to get an education. Instead of going to school and spending time with friends, she is forced to be responsible for a household as a wife and mother.

It’s often families living in poverty who, out of desperation, marry their daughters off in exchange for a dowry or bride price. It can mean financial support for the whole family, and the relief of having one less mouth to feed.

These decisions are often made with love, in the belief that they will give their daughters a more secure future.

Your donation will help tackle the root causes of this problem and support girls, their families, and their communities.

We must act now to prevent millions more girls becoming child brides.

Please donate today to stop child marriage so girls can start the futures they want for themselves.
