This year’s Plan International’s annual State of the World’s Girls report is based on research conducted across 31 countries with over 14,000 girls and young women. It aims at uncovering and understanding girls’ and young women’s experiences of being online on social media platforms.

In Plan International India’s Gender Vulnerability Index (GVI), Delhi Ranks 28th (out of 30 states) in India for Protection, as well as on the overall Gender Vulnerability Index (which has over 170 indicators), suggesting particular concerns in the area for women and girls.

Free to Be: Kampala

Free to Be Kampala recorded nearly 1,300 valid pins from girls and young women under 30 years old. Girls and young women were primarily recruited by team members going to crowded areas and individually promoting the tool, directly encouraging participants to drop a pin and describe safe and unsafe areas or a specific incident.

Free to Be: Madrid

The research found that the threat of sexual harassment with and without physical contact was the main issue for the participants of Free to Be Madrid. Overall, more than four out of five of the young women and girls who participated in Madrid experienced many forms of sexual harassment, but particularly verbal harassment.

Free to Be: Lima

Lima had a very high percentage of pins deemed bad compared to other cities. The threat of sexual harassment with and without physical contact was the main issue for the participants of Free to Be Lima.
