Myanmar Earthquake Response

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on 28 March 2025, causing houses and other buildings to collapse in Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand. The tremors were felt as far away as India.

Over 17.2 million people live in affected areas, with 9.1 million living in the hardest-hit areas. Entire communities have been upended, forcing people to seek shelter in makeshift conditions, disrupting markets, and bringing essential services - including water, sanitation, and health - to the verge of collapse.

Plan International provided immediate life-saving relief assistance to children and their families affected by the earthquake. We are now focusing on the long-term recovery effort as millions of people continue to need urgent support.

In collaboration with local partners and civil society organisations, Plan International has supported over 25,000 people with the provision of emergency shelter, sanitation and hygiene services, clean water, food, dignity kits and psychosocial support.

600 shelter kits have been distributed to households, containing essential items such as a tarpaulin, blanket, mosquito net, ropes, crowbar, binding wire, nails, hammer and pliers.

We have also distributed 400 dignity kits to girls and women and kits to help deliver babies safely, containing surgical gloves, soap, aprons, bandages, surgical instruments and bed sheets.

We are also actively supporting Child Protection and Education in Emergencies.

An essential part of this work has been the establishment of 21 child-friendly spaces to support the psychosocial health of children and provide a sense of normalcy for them. This includes training for local partners to scale up this critical intervention.
