The Plan International response team have been on the ground when Sunday’s earthquake struck. The team are conducting a needs assessment of the emergency, with child protection the highest priority. Plan International Indonesia immediately enacted a disaster response plan, collaborating with local and national authorities to prepare a wider response.
To support children and families living through the aftermath and ongoing aftershocks, Plan International will:
Immediately distribute 500 emergency shelter kits, including tarps and blankets, by air to those worst-affected
Ensure that families are given information and education around water, sanitation and hygiene to prevent disease outbreaks
Provide children dealing with trauma with rapid access to counselling and support
Halt additional disruption to children’s lives by supplying back-to-school kits to those whose education has been disrupted

Women and Children in emergencies
When disaster strikes, women and children are often the most vulnerable. In floods, earthquakes and cyclones, they are often left without shelter, food and medical care, which can leave them exposed to water borne diseases. Our work in Emergencies focuses on the most vulnerable, where we can have the most impact.
