End COVID For All

This COVID-19 crisis is not going to end for anyone, until it ends for everyone.

It’s a scary time for everyone but at least we have the basics covered. While Australia has the resources to rapidly respond to an uptick in COVID-19 cases, too many of our neighbours around the world are ill-equipped to deal with the pandemic at all.

And with no fences standing between any of us and COVID-19, we must offer a helping hand. Because we look out for our neighbours.

I believe Australia should provide vital support to vulnerable nations.

Aside from just the health impacts, COVID-19 could push over 70 million people around the world into extreme poverty undoing the progress made in recent years. And it’s the most vulnerable countries that are most at risk.

Some of our nearest  neighbours,  nations with fragile health systems, are less equipped to deal with the virus and are already experiencing the compounding effects of the virus on their vulnerable communities. For instance, 75% of people in least developed countries lack access to soap and water - the most effective means of prevention. This is true for the almost one million Rohingya refugees living in camps in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and others already affected by conflict.

Our government should respond to this unprecedented crisis by:

  • Protecting the world’s most vulnerable. This means contributing our fair share to the global humanitarian fund; investing in global health programs to prevent a second crisis of communicable disease outbreak; and plan and fund equitable and timely access to a COVID-19 vaccine for those in developing countries.
  • Strengthening systems for recovery. Providing essential medical supplies such as PPE, testing kits, medical equipment, and health information materials; support ongoing health and social care programs that continue to be needed; and support inclusive economic recovery in the region that protects vulnerable groups.
  • Investing in secure stable and prosperous economies. Resuming our network of economic ties with the region, including support for Pacific workers; and work with the G20 to secure an immediate moratorium on debt interest payments for vulnerable countries.

It's the only way we can
