Until we are all equal

Hunger, economic instability, climate change and conflict are devastating the lives of millions, pushing them further into disadvantage and inequality. Girls are bearing the greatest burden of this injustice.

Plan International Australia works alongside communities globally, delivering emergency response and long-term development programs to see girls valued and empowered, so that future generations inherit a brighter, more equitable future.

Together, we have the power to move humanity towards a better tomorrow for girls and communities globally.

Since the war broke out in April 2023 in Sudan, more than half a million people have crossed into South Sudan using various border crossings such as Renk in Upper Nile state, which is the biggest entry point. The figures continue to grow as the war in Sudan persists. Most of the people arrive hungry, tired and desperate.

In Renk, around 20,000 people are taking shelter with 6,000 in the transit centre and 14,000 in three locations outside the transit centre. Every day, thousands of refugees and returnees relocate from Renk to other areas. Simultaneously, a similar number of people arrive from Sudan in Renk posing challenges to humanitarian efforts in managing and providing support.

Sudan’s children caught in conflict

Children and families in Gaza need your help

Fade Dido, the mother of eight children, does not know what climate change is, but she does know what it’s like to be constantly hungry. A record-breaking hunger crisis has struck Ethiopia’s nomad community particularly hard; their lives are now being threatened by a severe drought.

Living in the camp is Fade Dido, a 24-year-old de facto single parent of eight children. Her oldest child is a 10-year-old boy and the youngest, daughter Kali who is sleeping in Dido’s lap, is one year and nine months. “When Kali was born, we still had 50 cows. Now we have none left,” Dido tells us.

Currently, 11 million people are suffering from food insecurity in Ethiopia’s drought-affected regions. Since late 2021, nearly seven million animals have died. This has been a complete catastrophe for the pastoralists, as their livestock provide them with not only food but also their only source of income.
