In April 2023, renewed conflict erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Since then, civilians have been caught in the crossfire of this unrelenting conflict.
As a result, widespread destruction has reduced entire neighbourhoods to rubble. Millions of families have been forced to flee. More than 12.36 million people have been displaced, leaving their homes behind in search of safety.
More than 25 million people are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance – close to the equivalent of Australia’s entire population. 14 million of these are children¹. Even in the face of relentless conflict, hunger has become the most urgent threat, 638,000 people are experiencing famine, with millions more at risk if food aid is not increased.
The humanitarian situation in El Fasher, North Darfur, has drastically deteriorated over the past few weeks. Intensified fighting culminated in the announcement by the Rapid Support Forces on 27 October 2025 that they had taken control of El Fasher. The SAF withdrew from the city shortly after.
Around 260,000 people still remain trapped in El Fasher with reports on the ground suggesting most of the civilians in the city are choosing to stay put in the city for fear of death while fleeing the violence.
Testimonies from Tawila speak of thousands of civilians arriving on foot from El Fasher, severely exhausted from the long journey by foot, showing signs of malnourishment to the extent that their physical appearance makes them unrecognisable to their relatives and many bearing injuries.
Many of the children arriving are in distress, having been separated from their families and in urgent need of protection and psychosocial support.
The conflict isn’t the only threat to survival. Famine has turned this crisis into an even more devastating catastrophe.
Food systems have collapsed, water is scarce, and access to basic human necessities has been ripped away from families.

For Marwa, a mother of three, every day begins with an agonising struggle – how to feed her children when there simply isn’t enough. Forced to flee her home due to escalating violence, she now lives in desperate conditions where starvation is the norm and survival is uncertain.
“Before, we ate three meals a day, but now it’s reduced to two meals and sometimes only one,” she says. “We give the children our food, and then we go to bed hungry.”
Her youngest child suffers from malnutrition. Her other children are battling health issues made worse by the harsh conditions they endure. Still, this devoted mother clings to hope for her children’s survival.
“We hope that aid agencies will supply food and healthcare for the children,” she says.
