Child-rights organisation and NGO Plan International Australia is ready to respond as Cyclone Pam threatens Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.
Local aid agencies are braced for the storm, which has intensified as it approaches the Pacific island nations.
Roshni Chand, who is working with Plan in Fiji, says: “People here are securing their roofs, shuttering their windows and preparing vital supplies like water. We are also getting evacuation centres ready for the storm.”
Following local assessment of the impact of the storm on the affected areas, Plan International Australia will if necessary be deploying staff to the Pacific nation to assist with the disaster response effort.
Plan is one of the oldest and largest children's development organisations in the world, founded 75 years ago, working in 51 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas and supported by 21 donor countries. Plan is independent, with no religious, political or governmental affiliations.
