Children’s rights and gender equality organisation Plan International Australia welcomes the new gender equality strategy launched today by the Victorian State Government, particularly its focuses on adolescent girls.
Safe and strong: A Victorian gender equality strategy will address inequality, sexism and violence against women in all its forms. Importantly, it recognises gender inequality as one of the key drivers behind family violence, and that gender inequality often begins in early childhood.
Our Watch, Australian’s national family violence prevention agency and a key partner of Plan International Australia, contributed valuable research to the strategy.
Plan International Australia together with Our Watch has been campaigning strongly throughout 2016 on the importance of gender equality for girls and young women in Australia.
In October, on International Day of the Girl, we jointly published the report Everyday sexism: girls’ and young women’s views on gender inequality in Australia, revealing Australian girls’ views on discrimination and sexism at home, at school, and in their private and public lives.
The Victorian Government’s Safe and strong strategy, and the wide range of reforms and initiatives it includes, is a positive and courageous step towards achieving gender equality, and one that Plan International Australia welcomes. Plan will continue to work with policy makers at all levels to highlight the particular needs of adolescent girls and young women.
