Intrepid Travel

Intrepid travellers explore the world's most amazing places - from the back streets of Asia, to the wilds of Africa and the colourful landscapes of Latin America. The company, like the adventures it organises for its travellers, has a commitment to discovering real people, real cultures and real experiences.  In doing so it recognises the importance of respecting the rights of the people and the environments it operates in.

Since Geoff Manchester and Darrell Wade started Intrepid Travel way back in '89, they have honoured a commitment to contribute back to the communities where it operates, including a partnerships with Plan that dates back nearly ten years.

As Plan's longest corporate partner, Intrepid have been proactive in ensuring funds are quickly directed to communities in need and in 2010 launched an appeal to support the flood affected people of Cusco.

Intrepid digs deep for Peru mudslides

Peru MudslidesIn January 2010, 2,000 international tourists had to be evacuated from flood-affected areas of Peru, near the famous Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. The floods damaged thousands of hectares of crops, washed away bridges, damaged highways and left thousands of people homeless. Peruvian authorities declared a state of emergency and families face severe food shortages in the coming weeks and months.

Intrepid Travel and the Intrepid Foundation launched an appeal to support the response of Plan Peru in devastated communities; Intrepid has made a donation of A$20,000. In addition, they will match all donations received from the public, dollar for dollar, up to another A$20,000.

Rachael Harvey, who works from the Intrepid Andes office, reports: "A number of communities that we work with are affected by the mudslides. Our friends in Chawaytire and Pampallaqta have lost crops and families in Taray and Umasamba also have lost their homes. Our Inca Trail cook, Virgilio, has lost everything in his home town of Limatambo.”

Darrell Wade from Intrepid says; "We believe Plan is in an excellent position to offer an effective and immediate response and we encourage travellers' support for our appeal."

Plan is a member of the Regional Emergency Operation Committee and is collaborating with other responding agencies to provide aid to children and families. Plan will focus on the most affected families in 320 communities that remain isolated because of the floods. Plan's response includes distributing food, cooking kits and water cans, providing families with tents and hygiene kits, children’s’ clothing

Intrepid Travel is always quick to respond to humanitarian crisis.  When the Asian Tsunami struck in December 2004 they were the first on the phone to Plan, initiating an appeal to the Intrepid Travel database in less than 24 hours.  Intrepid staff broke from their Christmas break to organise the appeal and the effort raised over $200,000 to help the people in Asia devastated by this unprecedented disaster.

Intrepid also has a commitment to long term community development and The Intrepid Foundation supports Plan’s ongoing work with annual contribution to priority projects including early childhood care and development in Indonesia and recognising legal rights within communities to help address HIV and AIDS support in Uganda.

There is a lighter side to the relationship as well with Intrepid donating some incredible trips for Plan competitions, including trips to Rajasthan, India and an African Safari.  Plan supporters are also included in the partnership and can enjoy a 5% discount when booking an intrepid adventure.  A further 5% will also be donated to Plan. It’s a partnership that truly engages with all stakeholders.
