Plan Australia

Use of child photos and personal details

Plan has international guidelines whereby the parent or guardian of a sponsored child gives permission for a sponsored child's personal details and photographs to be shared by Plan only for the purpose of finding them a sponsor. They do not expect that anyone other than Plan and the child's sponsor will have general access to their personal details. It is important that we respect and honour the trust that sponsored families have in Plan and Plan sponsors.

So that we can all help to protect children from abuse and breeches of privacy we have developed the following guidelines in line with our child protection policy and minimum standards.

Guidelines for displaying sponsored child personal details

If you would like to publicly display or distribute any details about your sponsored child;

Only display the following:

  • First name of sponsored child or any other family member
  • Age
  • Country name
  • General information such as enjoys skipping, wants to be a teacher etc.

Do not display or distribute the following:

  • The full Sponsor Child Information Sheet
  • The full Sponsor Child Update
  • Any letters from your sponsored child
  • Last name of sponsored child or any other family member
  • Geographical location other than country name,
  • Health status or other personal and private information provided in letters

Guidelines for displaying sponsored child photos

At home or in the work place

We welcome you to display your treasured sponsor child photos the same as you would display the photographs of family and friends at home or in the workplace (for example, in a frame).  This way you can share with others how they grow with the support of you and Plan’s programs.

In a public place

If you are a group, school or business/corporate sponsor and would like to display information about your sponsored child for group sharing or fundraising purposes please contact us first.  If you have any further questions please contact Plan's Child Protection Officer on Monday to Wednesday on 13 PLAN (13 7526).

Emailing and use on websites

It is of utmost importance that the safety and privacy of sponsored children are protected at all times, which is why we have put measures in place to prevent unauthorised access and copying of sponsored children's images from our website.

Plan takes potential abuse of child photographs on the web very seriously, therefore we ask all Plan sponsors not to place or distribute sponsored children’s personal details (as outlined in your family profile and personal letters– such as last name, geographical location other than country name, health status etc) or photographs on any website or intranet or in an email. To do so would place the sponsored child at risk of potential abuse and exploitation.

If you are a company or business and are able to guarantee that your sponsored child's image can be protected by your own security application and will abide by the 'Displaying sponsored children personal details' guidelines above please speak to Plan's Corporate Relations Manager to discuss becoming a corporate supporter of Plan by email or 13 PLAN (13 7526).
