Pakistan floods

Since the devastating Pakistan floods in July 2010, Plan has helped thousands of children and their communities with their immediate needs and ongoing livelihoods.

Pakistan floods

In July 2010, heavy monsoon rains triggered the worst floods to hit Pakistan in modern history, leaving a fifth of the country under water and displacing millions.

In the immediate wake of the floods Plan provided emergency relief to a quarter of a million people in the worst-hit areas of Punjab and Sindh. Over the subsequent months our work evolved from emergency relief to recovery and our achievements so far include: rebuilding schools, providing safe water and sanitation and creating secure spaces where children can play and receive emotional first aid.

Plan working with local organisations to help those affected, especially children, recover and rebuild their communities through a variety of projects.

Our priorities

Education » Plan has helped over 58,000 children return to school in Pakistan after their education was disrupted by the floods. Many schools were damaged or destroyed while a large number were turned into emergency shelters for displaced people.

Child Protection » Protecting children is a key priority in Plan's Pakistan floods recovery work. Children are particularly vulnerable in the aftermath of a disaster, both emotionally and physically, and many children have experienced nightmares and flashbacks of the disaster.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene » Plan's priority has been to ensure access to safe water, good sanitation and hygiene for 700,000 people in flood-affected areas of Pakistan. Our rural sanitation program is now being expanded to reach 2,100,000 people across the country.

Disaster Risk Reduction » More than 17,000 children and adults have taken part in Plan-supported disaster awareness activities in flood-prone areas of Pakistan along the Indus river bank.

Livelihoods » Cash for work schemes are designed to provide people with money when food and other necessary household goods are readily available but communities do not have the funds to buy them.

Immediate relief » Our immediate response focused on food, shelter, child protection, and water and sanitation.
