Haiti: Earthquake

Since the devastating Haiti earthquake in January 2010, Plan has helped thousands of children and their communities with their immediate needs and ongoing livelihoods.

Haiti: Earthquake

On the 12 January 2010, a catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti killing more than 230,000 people and left more than 1.5 million people homeless

Having worked in Haiti for more than 37 years, Plan was well placed to respond to the disaster. In the immediate aftermath of the quake, we provided 39,000 people with tents and basic non-food supplies, and then set to work to implement relief activities to prevent further deaths, assist the injured and help all affected Haitians to get back on their feet.

Our local presence has meant that we are playing a critical role in the relief efforts, collaborating with local organisations, governments, the UN, and other international agencies to respond to the immediate and ongoing needs of families and children in the midst of this unprecedented crisis.

Our priorities

The main priorities for humanitarian assistance in Haiti remain emergency shelter, site management, and sanitation. We are also working to ensure that children’s voices are heard, that they have the protection they need, and that they are able to continue their education.

Health - Mobile clinics and essential medical supplies are helping to meet health needs.
Education – We are helping thousands of children return to school
Child protection - From providing safe, child-friendly spaces to psychosocial support.
Livelihoods - Livelihood activities strengthen family economic security to guarantee the wellbeing of children.
Immediate relief - Food, shelter, health and sanitation have to come first
