Our plan in Honduras

Plan is working at the grassroots level in Honduras to empower communities to bring real and lasting change, so that their children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Plan began working in Honduras in Central America in 1977 and currently has programs in over 600 communities in 85 municipalities which aim to address the following issues affecting children:

  • Consequences of poverty cause violations of children’s rights to life and development
  • Limited access to quality education and healthcare
  • Low citizen participation

Plan’s programs and strategies to address these issues include:

Education

Plan Honduras works with other like-minded organisations to emphasise the importance of quality education from preschool through to high school, through teacher training, child and parent participation and involvement and improved educational resources.

Participation and citizenship

Plan Honduras works with communities, municipalities and the nation to offer opportunities to all - especially children - to be involved, to exercise their right to be heard and to act.  Effectiveness requires projects that orient citizens and leaders alike in how to relate, plan, negotiate and take joint responsibility.

Child rights

As a result of widespread poverty, violations to children’s rights to life and development occur in Honduras.  Plan works with families, authorities and other organisations at all levels, strengthening their capacities to respond appropriately to violence toward children and inappropriate child labour.

Individual economic security

Plan Honduras works with specialised financial organisations to assist economic long-term planning, advice and development for individuals and develop vocational training for adolescents to help improve socio-economic development.

Health

Plan Honduras works to promote good health practices, improved governmental health services and a safe sanitary environment that includes potable water and bathrooms.  One special emphasis is reproductive health measures to ensure safe birthing, prevention of sexually transmitted infections including HIV and AIDS.

Risk Management

Honduras is at risk from many natural disasters - flooding, drought, hurricanes and earthquakes.  We work during non-disaster times with preventive measures jointly with authorities and other organisations to prepare areas and municipalities at potential risk.  Plan will respond to disasters that do occur with humanitarian assistance and rebuilding.
