Haiti: Hurricane Alpha leaves 26 dead

Hurricane Alpha, the record-breaking 22nd storm of the hurricane season, has left 26 dead in the Carribean.

Alpha has had limited impact on the communities that Plan work with in the south-eastern part of Haiti, but other areas along the Dominican border and in western Haiti have been severely damaged.

Amongst these is the the remote community of Anse-A-Pitre, which Plan staff have visited by helicopter together with representatives from the UN, WHO, Caritas and the government.

In response to this latest hurricane, Plan is:

  • working with other agencies to provide emergency relief
  • helping to restock damaged community pharmacies
  • working with the Ministry of Health to treat the water distribution system, which has been polluted.
