Plan is working at the grassroots level in Zambia to empower communities to bring real and lasting change, so that their children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Plan began working in Zambia in 1996 and currently has programs in four districts which aim to address the following issues affecting children:
Plan’s programs and strategies to address these issues include:
Children in Zambia are at risk of death, malnutrition and illness as a result of high levels of preventable diseases, such as malaria, diarrhoea, dysentery, respiratory infections and HIV and AIDS. Plan Zambia works to increase access to primary healthcare services, build awareness of prevention practices and health education regarding HIV and AIDS. Plan is also increasing access to safe water and promoting good sanitation and hygiene practices, and also encouraging community-management of health services.
Plan Zambia is working to increase child enrolment by increasing access to quality early childhood and primary education and encourages children and communities to help manage education facilities.
Zambia is ranked as one of the poorest countries in Africa. Plan works to develop and improve sustainable agricultural activities and practices, promoting rural enterprise and assists capacity building of community-based organisations and farming groups for marketing produce.
Plan Zambia works to build, develop and enhance child-centred community building activities, child rights awareness campaigns and encouraging child participation in decision-making processes.
