Giving Children A Better Start to Life in Uganda Image

The situation

In Uganda, only 23% of children currently access Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) services, with children from rural areas more likely to miss out than their urban counterparts. There is a lack of curriculum and caregiver manuals; there are no formal early childhood care services for rural children aged under three; and most 3-6 year-olds in rural areas miss out on preschool.

Plan is working at the grassroots level with children and their families to provide thousands of boys and girls with a good start in life and the opportunity to be prepared for, and succeed at school.

Your support can:

  • Help children aged 5–6 prepare for school through a special transition program
  • Establish early learning centres that promote learning through play and age-appropriate activities
  • Set up parenting groups where parents and guardians are able to gain the skills and knowledge to support the development of their children
  • Provide vital training and mentoring of early learning centre caregivers on how to run parent groups and how to care for children with special needs
  • Train communities on how to make educational toys using local and traditional materials
  • Produce parenting and early learning manuals in local languages
  • Expand the project to an additional 36 communities, making 60 in total

Your donation makes a big difference

$50

can support a community enrolment drive where a team will go house-to-house to ensure five-year-olds are enrolled in preschool and six-year-olds in primary school

$100

can buy one bicycle for an Early Childhood Development worker so they can visit communities to support parenting groups and ECCD centres

$300

can support 15 days of training for an Early Learning caregiver to improve their skills so that they can support children’s health, learning and development

This project is also supported with funding from AusAID – the Australian Government Agency for International Development. If Plan receives more than is required for the current financial year, the donations in excess will be applied to subsequent years of this project or to other Priority Projects.
