Our plan in Uganda

Plan is working at the grassroots level in Uganda to help communities make real and lasting change, so that their children have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Sponsor a child in Uganda.

Plan began working in Uganda in 1992 and currently has programs in four districts which aim to address the following issues affecting children:

  • High number of HIV and AIDS orphans
  • Poor health conditions and high child mortality rates
  • Limited access to quality education
  • Lack of respect for child rights and incidences of abuse

Plan’s programs and strategies to address these issues include:

HIV and AIDS

With an increasing number of children orphaned by HIV and AIDS, Plan Uganda works to improve knowledge, awareness and attitudes sexual and reproductive health practices.  Plan also supports counselling and care services for children and families affected by HIV and AIDS and helps to reduce the effects of the disease on family life.

Household food and economic security

Uganda remains one of the poorest countries in Africa.  Plan Uganda works to improve household food security and assists provision of credit and savings management and education for families.

Child rights

Child rights are not always recognised or respected in Uganda and cases of child abuse are common.  Plan Uganda works with local partners to increase understanding of child rights, support the protection, care and development of children and assists development of child-centred community programs.

Health

Poor health conditions in Uganda results in one in ten children dying before five years of age.  Plan Uganda works to protect children from preventable diseases, reduce child malnutrition and improve access to healthcare services.  Plan also works to increase access to safe water, promote good hygiene, sanitation and reproductive health practices and encourages child and community involvement in managing community health services.

Education

Plan Uganda works to improve access to quality education and increase completion rates for all children.  Learning areas such as agricultural knowledge and skills are promoted.  Plan also focuses on promoting schooling for females and children with disabilities and encourages child and community participation in management of educational facilities.
