Unfortunately more than 10 million children die each year in the developing world, the vast majority from causes preventable through a combination of good care, nutrition, and medical treatment. In low-income countries, one child in 11 dies before their fifth birthday, compared with 1 in 143 in high-income countries.
Given this experience for children, a major component of Plan’s work is focussed on improving the survival rate for children. This includes pre and post-natal support for mothers, immunisation for children, disease control and improvements in water and sanitation.
Plan believes in a world in which all children realise their full potential. Children dying before the age of five is simply not acceptable to that vision. Globally Plan is therefore committed, along with other organisations, to the Millennium Development Goals related to survival. These are:
|
Target 5: |
Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate. |
|
Target 6: |
Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio. |
|
Target 7: |
Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS. |
|
Target 8: |
Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases. |
