VIETNAM: Plan's work in 2006

Phu Tho program unit: Pre-school teachers learn to make educational toys. Unfortunately, in many poor rural communities in Vietnam there is a lack of educational toys for children in pre-schools to play with. Plan cooperated with the Ministry of Education and Training to organise a course for pre-school teachers on making toys from local materials. Thanks to the toy making training, teachers in the pre-schools in Van Luong, Xuan Quang and Tho Van communes and the Tam Nong District can make new and exciting toys for their classroom. In Thai Nguyen province in Vietnam, as part of the Global Campaign for Education, children and teachers decided to organize a forum and invite high level ranking officials to attend to allow the children to voice their concerns directly and talk with the officials. Here an ethnic minority child calls on officials to focus on improving the quality of education for ethnic minority children living in mountainous areas. Core children's groups have now been established to support activities in all schools. Children (especially ethnic minority children) have gradually become more confident and proactive about expressing their views.
Quang Tri program unit: Safe vegetables: A new direction on new income generation for the poor. Building safe vegetable gardens in Vietnam has not only improved household income but also changed the people's perception from traditional practices to embracing new and scientific techniques applied in production of chemical free vegetables. Hanoi progrma unit: Hai's story: "I have friends and can draw my mother now" In Vietnam, the number of Children with Disability (CWD) is 1.2 million and most do not attend school because of bullying. The Child-to-Child club initiative is fostering understanding and acceptance between disabled and non disabled children, encouraging CWD to continue their education.
