Our plan in Vietnam

Plan is working at the grassroots level in Vietnam to empower communities to bring real and lasting change, so that their children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Plan began working in Vietnam in 1993 and currently has programs in over 180 communities across the country which aim to address the following issues affecting children:

  • Lack of food and income security
  • Poor child and maternal health
  • Environmental pollution and limited access to safe water and sanitation services
  • Poor access to quality education
  • Inadequate protection and care of vulnerable children
  • Limited access to basic services for poor migrant children
  • Low child and family involvement in decision-making processes
  • High risk of accidents, injury, neglect, exploitation and physical, psychological and sexual abuse in homes, schools, and communities

Plan’s programs and strategies to address these issues include:

Health

Children and women of childbearing age are susceptible to poor health conditions.  Plan Vietnam works to improve access to quality healthcare services and also supports awareness campaigns for reproductive and sexual health, particularly in relation to HIV and AIDS.  Plan also works to secure clean and safe water access and promotes good hygiene and sanitation practices.

Education

Learning and skills retention is poor in Vietnam.  Plan works to improve early childcare development through home and centre-based pre-schooling.  Plan programs also work to increase access to quality basic education and encourage child and community participation in management of education facilities.

Household economic security

Plan Vietnam works to improve employment and income-generating activities for Vietnamese families through vocational training, agricultural education and increased access to financial services.

Child rights and protection

With over 27 million children in Vietnam, often they are vulnerable to limited access to basic services, limited understanding of child rights and the need for protection.  Plan Vietnam works to raise awareness of child abuse and protection rights, encouraging the involvement of children and families in advocating for these rights.  Plan also supports increased access to basic services, particularly for street and working children, children with disabilities and those suffering from poverty.
