Sri Lanka: floods and landslides follow torrential rain

Floods and landslides have hit Plan-supported communities in Sri Lanka following weeks of torrential rain.

In Moneragala, 140 families in ten communities have been affected by flooding; one person - the father of a sponsored child - is reported dead.

Thirteen homes in communities where Plan works have been partly or completely damaged. Some roads have also been washed away, restricting movements.

Taking action

Plan is proposing to:

  • support the reconstruction of the 13 houses destroyed in the communities where we work
  • distribute school materials for around 200 children
  • support the reconstruction of damaged roads

In Plantation five homes have been destroyed by landslides caused by the rains - Plan will support their reconstruction.

The government is assessing damage and providing dry rations. Families who have been affected are staying with neighbours and some are in temporary shelters.

Plan Sri Lanka will continue to monitor the situation and support the communities affected.
