The situation

Many families in Northern Samar are farmers trapped in poverty by a cycle of poor rice yields, depleted soils and crops damaged by frequent drought, floods and typhoons. Families often become overwhelmed by debt and struggle to feed themselves, and pay for school fees and healthcare.

Thanks to your support, Plan is educating families about organic crops and alternative farming techniques, so that they can grow a diverse range of nutritious, organic food to eat and sell.

Your support can:

  • Assist farming families to learn new farming skills, such as alternative crops and new techniques that help to increase crop quality and yield
  • Help develop farming plans so farmers can better organise their resources, resulting in better use of land and maximised productivity
  • Train community-nominated para-technicians on new technologies such as soil and water conservation and how to produce organic fertilisers for their crops
  • Assist farmers to raise livestock such as pigs and chickens, providing families with an additional income source and making them more resilient
  • Provide mentoring and support to farmers through Farmers Associations, which have also established community demonstration plots so farmers can practice what they have learnt
  • Ensure women are included in project activities, giving them the opportunity to manage their own crops and sell excess produce to fund the feeding program at their children's schools
  • Conduct gender training in partnership with the Farmers Associations to ensure farmers gain a greater understanding about gender issues

Your donation makes a big difference

$50
