Protection of Women Migrant Workers in Indonesia
Approximately 70% of the estimated four million Indonesians working abroad are women. Many are drawn in by recruitment agencies' promises of secure and well-paid jobs, which in reality, for most are nothing more than slave labour. Poor economic conditions and limited opportunities in rural areas make such promises attractive. Further, families left behind by migrant workers, and children in particular are vulnerable to neglect and abuse.
Plan aims to increase community awareness, establish community protection groups and lobby for legal protection of migrant workers and their families.
