Plan responds to Japanese earthquake and Tsunami.

04-April-2011

Houses and cars are swept out to sea in Kesennuma city.

Plan is assessing how we can help protect and support children affected by the crisis in Japan.

Chief executive Ian Wishart said children were particularly vulnerable in the aftermath of such disasters, and that Plan's Japanese office had officially requested support to ensure that children were protected.

"Plan's global disaster response policy co-ordinator, Dr Unni Krishnan, is currently on the way to Japan. He will be on the ground by tomorrow morning," said Mr Wishart. "Dr Krishnan will be assessing the situation and guiding Plan's response so we can ensure that children are protected and supported in the midst of this unfolding disaster."

Dr Krishnan was quoted in The Sunday Age's editorial about the disaster.

Donations to Plan's work with the children of Japan can be made via the Children in Crisis Fund.

More information will be available over the coming 24 hours, and Dr Krishnan will be available for interview soon.
