A young boy receives food in the Quang Ngai province
More than six months after Typhoon Ketsana caused devastation across Vietnam, Plan is continuing to provide emergency support to 120,000 people.
The typhoon killed more than 160 people, destroyed 21,000 houses and ruined 100,000 hectares of agricultural land when it hit the central coastal provinces on September 29 last year.
Local people had been only weeks away from harvest season when the typhoon destroyed their crops. In Binh Minh commune, Plan staff visited households and talked with women who showed staff wet and mouldy rice that could no longer be used to feed their families. Other assets were either washed away or ruined and clothes and furniture were put in front of homes to dry.
Plan moved quickly to provide emergency aid to affected communities in Kom Tum, Quang Tri and Quang Ngai.
Since Typhoon Ketsana struck, Plan has provided
Local farmer Mr Bay said: ‘The training on agriculture provided by Plan and the local Department of Agricultural and Rural Development was helpful to me and my family. We are equipped with knowledge not only for this crop but for our future productions.’

Ho Thi The’s story
'We lost everything in this disaster day. House, clothes, food ... nothing left. Thanks God that all of the five members in my family were alive,' said The, a Pa Ko ethnic woman who lost all of her belongings during the storm. Plan staff visited The on a sunny day last month, six months after the typhoon. She sat happily at the front of her newly-built house (thanks to Plan and Sida), cutting cassava. ‘Thanks to Plan, we have today with a roof on head and rice on stock. The harvesting season is coming. I believe in the better tomorrow,’ said The. |
