Thailand is facing the worst floods in five decades, with floodwaters affecting more than one third of the country’s provinces.
More than 5 million people have been affected since the floods began in late July, including over 800,000 children and young people.
To date, the floods have claimed 567 lives, including 81 children who died mostly from drowning.
Over one hundred thousand people have left their homes and taken refuge in evacuation shelters across the country, including many in the capital city Bangkok.
Plan has launched a three-month relief program to assist those who are affected. This includes distributing everyday essential items for families with children. So far we have distributed:
- 2100 relief kits
- 2100 hygiene kits
- 1200 mosquito nets for infants
- 6000 nappies
We are also establishing child friendly spaces and breastfeeding baby stations at evacuation centres, reaching about 6000 people in need.
The child-friendly spaces provide a safe environment for children of families displaced by the floods, providing access to educational books, toys, crayons, biscuits and UHT milk.
Plan has also provided assistance and supplies for Safe Infant Feeding Stations in eight evacuation centres across the country.
Our six-month recovery program will focus on psycho-social support for children and families, provision of back-to school kits, learning materials and educational equipment, and improved disaster risk reduction to help families prepare for future emergencies.
