The floodwaters in Pakistan continue to rise as the number of people killed and impacted by the worst flooding in living memory increases. The United Nations has declared the disaster to be worse than the 2005 Indian Ocean tsunami.
The latest information indicates that up to 4000 people may have died and as many as 15 million people have been affected.
Plan has been responding in the Provinces of Sindh and Southern Punjab. You can support our work for the people of Pakistan by donating to the Children in Crisis Fund.
In the Muzzaffargarh area of Southern Punjab, Plan has distributed cooked food to about 12,000 people, distributed nutritional food packs for children to 500 families and health and hygiene kits to 420 families; repaired 65 camp latrines, built 10 new latrines, repaired 37 water pumps, installed lighting and distributed community sized tents.
Many people have had to abandon livestock, often their main livelihood, and there are fears for food security in the coming months. The province of Punjab, known as the ‘bread basket’ of Pakistan, has lost about 1.4 million acres of harvested crops in the past week or so.
“The crops were ready for harvest and then it was time to plant the crops for the winter, but seeing the extent of damage caused by the water and mud we cannot even begin to assess the impact it will have in the coming months,” said Rashid Javed, Plan Pakistan’s Acting Country Director.
Photographs taken over the past week demonstrate the severity of the flooding and its impact on the people. You can watch a slide show below.
Plan is seeking $US5 million to help with our relief work in Pakistan. Please donate to our Children in Crisis Fund.
