The earthquake has caused many buildings in Haiti to collapse. Picture: Reuters
Earlier today an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. The epicentre was about 15 kilometres from the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Initial reports are limited due to damaged communications infrastructure, but major news services are reporting that many buildings, including the presidential palace, have been destroyed, and that many people are now digging through collapsed buildings looking for survivors.
Plan staff in Haiti are moving quickly to assess the situation, and will soon be initiating emergency response plans. Plan’s response to disasters emphasises the immediate needs and protection of children who are among the most vulnerable in the wake of a disaster.
Plan International has been working in Haiti since 1973, with the Plan Haiti office located in Port-au-Prince. Find out more about Plan’s work in Haiti.
