Goodwill Youth Reporter Blog: Hearts open at the hockey

Pakistan vs India hockey at the Commonwealth GamesBy Pakistan's youth reporters

We travelled with our new friends, the Indian Plan youth reporters, and travelled to the hockey stadium by tram to watch the tough contest between India and Pakistan.

The stadium was jam packed and a sea of colour with zealous spectators of both teams draped in their national flags. One interesting thing in the stadium was that some Australian spectators were also waving the Pakistani flags in their hands.

Then the umpire blew the whistle and the match started. Both teams were showing great spirit but India took a 1-0 lead with the fantastic field goal. Pakistan did their best to make the equalizer and their efforts came to fruition with the goal of Khan Muhammad and the first half ending with 1-1 score on the board.

As the second half began, the Pakistani team looked totally in command of the game. Spectators of both teams were encouraging their teams by singing national songs and waving the flags in the air. Dominating the Indian team, Pakistan quickly increased their lead to 4-1.

As the match came to an end the Pakistani players made a round of stadium waving their hands and the spectators rewarded them with applause. Indian players and spectators showed great sportsmanship and appreciated the Pakistani team on their success. The environment of the stadium was very friendly and the people from the both countries were open hearted.

Following the match, we were excited to interview Muhammad Suqlain, the captain of the Pakistani team to capture his feelings about match. We then interviewed the proxy chief of the Pakistani squad, Col Sujatt, about hockey and measures taken by the Pakistani government to lift the standards of Pakistani hockey.
