The Australian Embassy in Saudi Arabia has made a substantial donation to Plan, for our ongoing work in Haiti.
Australia’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Kevin Magee, handed over the generous donation of 25,000 Riyals (A$7530) collected by the embassy’s Social Club to contribute to Plan’s ongoing Haiti operations. Collecting this amount on behalf of Plan International, Deepali Sood, Head of Plan International's ‘Because I am a Girl’ global campaign on girls' rights, said this was a huge honour for Plan. Explaining Plan’s contribution in Haiti in the last six months on relief work and health and education for children, she also emphasised the importance of the coming months, to help prepare the communities and children for the hurricane season.
Ambassador Kevin Magee welcomed the club’s decision to support Plan, and thanked Ms Sood for accepting the donation on Plan’s behalf, saying: “we’re always happy to support charitable causes, and there is no better or more worthy cause than helping children”.
Chris Hodder, president of the Social Club, thanked Third Secretary Tamsin Sanderson for the thorough investigation she had done to find a charity that could best use the donation. Chris explained that the Australian embassy in the Kingdom is quite unique in constituting such a club; in addition to organising social and cultural activities for the Australian citizens, the club firmly believes in charity and development work.
Plan's priorities to help children and their families recover from the devastating earthquake in Haiti include: health (mobile clinics and essential medical supplies to meet health needs); child protection (providing safe, child-friendly spaces and psychosocial support); education (helping thousands of children back to school); and livelihoods (activities to strengthen family economic security to guarantee the wellbeing of children).
