Media skills give youth a voice in Vietnam

PARTICIPATION: Children have valuable advice to give in their community's development and Plan actively encourages their participation. When children are involved in decision-making, they learn leadership skills.

Here is an example of how Plan provides the opportunities for children to participate in their societies:

Media skills give youth a voiceI am very honoured to be a member of the Young Media Club. My sincere thanks to all of you and Plan who have created a valuable venue for all of us, YMC and children in Huong Thuy district to participate in, to express, and to speak out our feelings and thoughts..Nguyen, a young journalist from Huong Thuy Young Media Club, Vietnam.

Young Media Clubs in Vietnam provide children and young people with the opportunity to participate in media and have a voice to publicly express themselves and their concerns through the mass media.

The first Young Media Club in Vietnam was set up in 1998. In 2004, there are now 10 media clubs with more than 150 children and young people producing television programs, newspaper articles and broadcasting their own radio shows.

Media skills give youth a voiceHere Nguyen writes: .After one year joining the club, I did not feel shy any more. I feel more confident, more brave to speak in front of a large audience. I can speak out what I think of a problem. Joining the club, I can practice my writing skill. I can also practice my organising skills to facilitate a club meeting. Moreover, I have got to know more friends from other clubs. I can share my feelings with other members. Especially, this is an opportunity for me to see our society around me much better. I have seen different situations of children because I often go out to interview them. I have my feelings for them, for poor people and I would like to do something for them from my work as a young journalist..

When young people like Nguyen are provided with the opportunity to participate in their society, they bring issues that affect them and their peers, to the public.s attention.

Media skills give youth a voiceIn all of Plan's work, the active participation of children in their own development and their communities. development is paramount. Participation is also one of the rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which came into being in 1989. However, Plan has stood for the rights of children since the organisation was founded in 1937.

Participation-focused programs such as the Young Media Club program in Vietnam, are funded by donations and child sponsorships.
