Children can make you believe in miracles. Children like Bryan, who cycles to and from school and helps with chores at home, helping in the farm and selling rice cakes, just like other kids his age (11). However, he does all this with just one leg.
And whilst his amputation could make you feel sorry for him, his sunny expression is inspiring and makes you want to imitate him. We feel sure he will overcome life's challenges and realise his dream of becoming a teacher one day.
Bryan has been sponsored through Plan for three years, living in a small rural community in the Phillipines. On a rainy afternoon in 2002 he was playing inside a partially-constructed house and poked a spider with a bamboo stick. He reached out as it rested on an unfinished terrace where a live wire hung. As the stick touched the dangling cable, he was electrified. A passer-by saw him bounce from the 2nd floor to the ground. Bryan was rushed to hospital and treated for one month after amputation.
Bryan was always excited to welcome visitors at the foot of his bed, who inspired him to recuperate quickly. Determined to ride a bicycle to get to school, he now rides with enthusiasm, treading the pedal with one foot.
Seeing him whistling a happy tune would make most people wonder how he remains a dynamic kid who can even do more with less.
On the day we met him, his eyes beamed with excitement as he saw visitors arrive. Bryan wants an artificial leg. He has been screened for the 'Differently-Abled Children Project' (DACREP), a project Plan supports for children with disabilities, and is awaiting a leg prosthesis, a support instrument that would enable him to do so much more.
Bryan hopes it will help him realise his dream: "I want to finish my studies and become a teacher someday."
We look forward to seeing it happen.
