Extreme flooding continues to wash away Sudan's livelihood

17-September-2007

Plagued by heavy rains and flash flooding since mid-July, Sudan continues to struggle as farms, livestock, roads, latrines, hospitals and schools have been damaged or swept away.

Reports indicate more than 110 people have been killed, and 100,000 households are currently affected. With 50,000 houses destroyed and a further 42,000 damaged, the picture in Sudan is bleak.

To date, 57 Plan communities – home to 18,000 families – have been affected. Houses, schools, and water and sanitation systems have been damaged or destroyed.

Plan is providing immediate emergency relief and will address recovery needs in the coming days and weeks.

Plan’s response has centered on providing immediate relief items such as food, water, blankets and tents, as well as improving sanitation.

Plan continues to assess the situation and will continue to update this site as more information becomes available on the devastating flooding in Sudan.
