Simple preventative measures, like handwashing, can limit the spread of cholera. |
Cholera outbreak in Cameroon The cholera epidemic in Cameroon continues to spread and claim lives. Children under the age of five are especially vulnerable to the disease. Plan is stepping up its response to the Cameroon cholera outbreak by deploying teams of 'cholera soldiers' to help tackle the rising death toll.Plan is working in seven regions, carrying out cholera prevention and treatment activities, providing treatment materials, and community education. Our community volunteers have been going door to door to raise awareness about cholera, provide water treatment tablets and cleaning materials such as bleach. The health of residents is checked and those who may have contracted the disease are referred to hospitals for treatment. Plan's ongoing efforts to combat the cholera epidemic in Cameroon highlight the importance of clean, potable water and basic hygiene and sanitation to prevent the spread of disease. Floods in Tanzania Floods in Tanzania have resulted in over 3500 people losing their homes. Plan in Tanzania has been involved in disaster preparedness and response as well as in the distribution of relief materials to flood victims. Plan is also working to ensure communities have a long term strategy and infrastructure to avoid any further destruction in the future. |
When a crisis hits, children are particularly vulnerable. Usually protected by their communities and families, this first line of defence is under stress and needs support. In emergencies, Plan works with communities (in partnership with national governments and other agencies) to ensure they are supported to protect and care for their children in a tense and difficult time.
Plan’s emergency response aims to lessen the impact on the most vulnerable, and to provide long-term, sustainable support with a strong focus on rebuilding and rehabilitation.
Donations to the Children in Crisis Fund will help ensure that our work in emergencies not only helps children and families at the time of the disaster, but also well into the future.
Plan International Australia maintains the Children in Crisis Fund to provide ongoing finances that are used to respond to the needs of children and communities affected by disasters around the world. Plan will at times appeal to the public for funds to go to specific disaster responses. Any funds donated by the public that exceed requirements for specific disaster appeals will be held in the fund for use in responding to other disasters and emergencies affecting children and their communities.
