A child's youngest years are the foundation for their future physical and mental health, emotional security, cultural and personal identity, and competencies. However, children living in poverty are not reaching their potential. This is due to poor health and nutrition and other developmental factors.

For a young girl in Africa, this can mean:

• 1 in 3 chance of being malnourished
• 1 in 2 chance of not completing primary education
• 2 in 3 chance she won’t be able to read or write as a teen

Education is one of the most effective investments in bringing about the generational change that can break the cycle of poverty.

Plan's ECCD projects provide life-changing support to help ensure children from even the most impoverished background have the best opportunity to succeed in school and in life.

Five year old Gloria was brought to the attention of Plan by a community member who had seen her around the neighbourhood collecting scrap materials from garages and dumpsters. Why? So she can help her family survive ... ... now Gloria (in blue) is being prepared for success in school through a Plan Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) project.

One of the best ways you can help a child like Gloria have a foundation for a better future is by supporting Plan’s ECCD projects. ECCD projects are for children 8 years of age and younger, their parents and caregivers and help provide the best start to a child’s life.

Plan-supported ECCD projects aim to ensure that children grow up healthy, well nourished, and protected from harm, with a sense of self-worth and identity. This ensures their well-being now, prepares them for success at school, and gives them the foundation for becoming adults who can achieve their full potential. But we need your support to fund this crucial program in the coming year.

Your support will assist Plan staff, volunteers and parents to work together to achieve the best outcomes for children. This includes:

• A parenting program that builds knowledge and practical skills to improve child health, development, learning and protection through a process that engages parents
• A high quality early learning program that targets every child in the year before primary school to ensure they are ready to succeed in school
• A transitions program with school and community based activities that enable children to enter primary school at the right age, stay in school and learn
• Strengthening links with all levels of government in support of ECCD

Through our Community Led Action for Children (CLAC) approach in countries like Uganda and Ethiopia, we are working with families and communities living in poverty to ensure children are able to reach their full potential.

Through Plan, you can support parents with low levels of education to gain and improve skills to effectively support their children’s development and early learning.

For example, in Plan-supported parenting groups, mothers and fathers talk about child rights and child development, which helps with raising the whole family. And at times of stress (like famine) families are better prepared to face the crisis.
