Make Poverty History - first White Band Day of action

July 1st is the first global day of action to Make Poverty History. Campaign coalition members and our supporters are organizing a range of fun activities and events around the nation to show support to Make Poverty History.

If you can’t make it to an event, then order some white Make Poverty History wristbands. Wear them, share them and talk about the campaign.

Below are details of some of the events planned around the nation

SYDNEY: CITY - 1 JULY

7am - MPH banner on the northern pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is unfurled.

10.30 or 11.30 – Standing up for the Millennium Development Goals - Millennium Development Goal ‘statues’ will walk from the Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park at 10.30am. The statues will wind their way through city streets to First Fleet Park, Circular Quay where they will be met by supporters to launch the Make Poverty History campaign at 11.30am.

There will be lots of fun activities relating to the eight Millennium Development Goals for supporters to be involved in. To get involved or find out more contact Margaret Di Nicola on 8204 3902.

SYDNEY: MANLY – 1 & 2 JULY

Supporters will be selling whitebands anytime from St. Matthews Church on the Corso, 1 Darley Road.There will also be stalls on July1st and 2nd at The Corso and The Ferry WharfContact : Peter Horsley on 0425 354 234.

MELBOURNE: CITY – 1 JULY

Daybreak – Watch out for the Make Poverty History hot air balloon.

12 noon – Giant letters roving Melbourne - Giant letters spelling out Make Poverty History will be roving the city between 12 and 2pm, visiting Federation Square, the City Square, Bourke St Mall, the State Library and Parliament House handing out Make Poverty History wristbands and talking to the public. Meet at our stall in the Bourke St Mall at 11.45am.  We need lots of volunteers for this event!

An Oxfam stall in Bourke St Mall will be selling the White Wrist Bands and providing information on the campaign. The stall will run from 11am to 7pm so come and visit.

MELBOURNE: FITZROY- 3 JULY

Join the Make Poverty History Coalition for a screening of Live8, the biggest music event in history. We’re asking supporters to come along to the Grace Darling Hotel at 114 Smith St, Fitzroy on Sunday July 3 from 8pm.

The Channel 9 screening at 8:30 will be preceded by an introduction to the Make Poverty History campaign at 8:15. White Wristbands will be available as will campaign materials.

MELBOURNE: CITY - 6 AUGUST

Come along to a Make Poverty History Coalition Campaign Training Workshop. It will feature three sessions outlining how you can campaign in the community, lobby your MPs and work with local media.

The workshop will be held from 9:30am – 1pm on Saturday August 6th at RMIT City Campus and is open to anyone who is interested in the campaign.

PERTH: CITY – 1 JULY

Oxfam supporters will be handing out white Make Poverty History wristbands in Perth City.

MPH banners will be on display at Fair Go Trading, The Naked Bean, Absolutely Organic and a heap of other stores and businesses throughout Perth.  If your shop or business would like a banner or for more information, contact Vanya Bromilow on (08) 9262 8211.

BRISBANE: ROMA ST PARKLANDS - 30 JUNE

Sunset Festival at the Roma St Parklands from 5pm.  Bands include Onion, Moot, The Picture Book, Remedy and Matt Nelson.  You will be able to buy a whiteband, sign a petition and hear people talk about aid, fair trade, debt and poverty. Contact Vision generation at vgen_qld@hotmail.com

BRISBANE: SOUTHBANK – 1 JULY

Live8 Concert Broadcast at South Bank– July 2

South Bank will broadcast a free public screening of the first four hours of the event on Saturday July 2 from 9.30pm until 1.30am on the Suncorp Superscreen in the Suncorp Piazza.

TOOWOOMBA - JULY 2

The Toowoomba community will join the estimated two and a half billion people across the world in the fight against world poverty when the Live8 concert airs across the world on July 2.  The concerts can be seen in two venues in Toowoomba, the PCYC and The Irish Club. The concert will begin at 9.30pm and can be viewed by home viewers on FOX8 on AUSTAR.

ADELAIDE: STIRLING – 1 JULY

All day – banners in the main street of Stirling.

4.30 pm – 5.30pm - sign the giant postcard asking the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to commit to going to the United Nations Millennium Goals Summit in September. White wristbands and Fairtrade coffee available at the event.

Stirling Council Lawns, Stirling - Up the SE freeway, take the Stirling Exit, past the first roundabout and before the second roundabout.

CANBERRA: GAREMA PLACE - 1 JULY

Information site in Garema Place for people to sign the pledge and purchase whitebands.

CANBERRA: KINGSTON - 2 JULY

Watch the Live 8 concert and some Aussie music at the Holy Grail Bar at Kingston.  Cover charge will be donated to charity.  Kicks off at 8:30pm.

TASMANIA: LAUNCESTON- 1 JULY

Join supporters at their stand in the Brisbane St Mall to sign petitions and letters, purchase a white “MAKE POVERTY HISTORY’ wristband and obtain information on the make poverty history campaign issues.
