Reporter Profiles: Ghana

Meet the three youth reporters from Ghana who were selected to report on the Commonwealth Games as part of Plan's youth media program.

Enoch and Fatimata live in Sissala district; a rural area in the upper west of Ghana — where they are members of the Plan-assisted youth media club "Whatz Up Lets Talk Rights of Children".

Sophia lives in Bawjiase district in central Ghana and is a member of the award-winning "Curious Minds — Children and Youth in Broadcasting". Both clubs produce television and radio shows on child rights issues that are broadcast nationally in Ghana.

What do you know about Melbourne?
It is a city in Australia that can experience all seasons in a day. It is hosting the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

What are you most looking forward to?
To meet and share knowledge with cultural ambassadors in Australia and all participating youth groups. I also will want to meet athletes from Ghana and other countries.

How did you become a member Whatz Up?
I was auditioned and finally became a member by registration.

What is life like in Ghana?
Life in Ghana is cool and interesting especially living in a rural community like mine- Tumu upper west region of Ghana.

What are your thoughts on coming to Australia?
I want to know more about the citizens, language spoken, the culture, tourist sites and above all, tell my new friends about my country!

What are you most looking forward to?
To see and know what parents as well as the government has done and are doing for children in terms of the creation of recreational grounds. I also want to see whether children's rights are being respected.

What are your thoughts on coming to Australia?
I hope to see the many plants and animals which are native only in Australia. I have heard of the Kangaroos which carry their young ones in pouches attached naturally to their tummies.

What do you hope to achieve while in Australia?
I hope to learn about life of school children, the type of education, the cultural practices and socialise with the people I may be in contact with in my official rounds.

What do you know about Melbourne?
Even through Canberra is the capital of the country, Melbourne is larger. It is a communication centre linking most of the cities in the east and south by air, land and sea.

What do you know about the Commonwealth Games?
It brings all former British Colonies together for sports and games.
